Summary:
This project is concerned with the hydrodynamics of groundwater. Groundwater models are used to study water reserves and environmental pollution. Many engineering and architects’ offices rely on the services of companies like the industrial partner TK Consult in handling hydraulic engineering problems.

From the IT point of view, hydro IT applications can be characterized as follows:

• simulating groundwater models makes demands on processing power;
• visual presentation is necessary;
• the pattern of relations between service providers (like TK Consult) and the customers makes distributed systems essential.

The aim is to put the services of TK Consult on a client/server basis. This will enable the industrial partner to deliver its services straight to the customer via electronic media. The conceptional deliverables will be of a generic nature and capable of supporting other small and medium-sized companies in their efforts to harness information technology to enhance their economic strength.

Cooperation:
The lead applicant works in the University of Basel information technology institute. This ensures contacts with related Euro projects. The industrial partner is a small Zurich company, TK Consult, which specializes in groundwater simulation.
